Burning Blue Design is extremely proud to release our latest product for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, Martha’s Vineyard Airport (ICAO code: KMVY, IATA code: MVY)

The quaint New England island of Martha’s Vineyard has been a popular destination for US Presidents for the best part of a century, and Martha’s Vineyard Airport has been no stranger to seeing Air Force One touchdown on her runway over the years.

Originally built in 1942 as Naval Auxiliary Air Facility Martha’s Vineyard, the airport was primarily used for training thousands of fighter pilots on their initial training before their deployment to aircraft carriers in the Pacific theatre. After World War Two the airfield was left dormant and put into caretaker status before finally transferring over to Dukes County in 1959 and becoming Martha’s Vineyard Airport.

Today the airport has had numerous makeovers and now sports a lively General Aviation hub and operates a number of charter and commuter flights which ferry people daily to and from the Vineyard to the mainland and other surrounding islands.

Martha’s Vineyard Airport has been recreated faithfully over many hundreds of hours by Burning Blue Design’s modellers and features:

  • Over 100 custom 3D objects have been used in Martha’s Vineyard Airport, each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) allowing for far more realistic textures and all airport buildings have been created using high resolution photos provided by Martha’s Vineyard Airport.
  • Over ten thousand carefully placed stock assets have been across the airport and surrounding area, every fence, shrub, light and tree has been placed in it’s correct location bringing life to Martha’s Vineyard airport and the surrounding area.
  • An assortment of ground workers, passengers and vehicles have been around ensuring an atmosphere of a working airport.
  • High resolution colour corrected ground textures taken from Bing maps and manipulated for consistency and realism which far surpasses the quality of the stock Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 ground texture.
  • As with all Burning Blue Design Products new custom working Windsocks have been created and accurately placed around the airport.
  • Full night lighting placed across the airport and within and around the hangars and buildings.
  • Correct AI pattern procedures and accurate taxiway and runway placement have been incorporated into the release.
  • Many custom vehicles placed around the airport:
    • MVY OshKosh Striker 4×4 Airport Firetruck.
    • Martha’s Vineyard Transit Authority Busses.
    • Gulfstream G650
    • Bombardier Challenger 350

A big thank you to all of the Beta testers who helped immensely throughout the development process:

I live on Martha’s Vineyard, and flew out of this airport for Edgartown Air, and later, Cape Air back in the late 1980s. I remember the original MS Flight Sim (1982) actually had the KMVY airport included, so, as much as I’m impressed with the MSFS 2020 graphics, the built in KMVY airport rendering was disappointing, especially the ramp area. I actually found this site accidentally while looking for some pictures of the airport buildings, and was pleasantly surprised to find they had built a KMVY airport. We immediately downloaded a copy and installed it (installation is a breeze – basically copy a folder into your Community folder), and it looks great (and quite accurate)! Lots of detail beyond just the buildings being accurate (equipment, passengers in the holding area, baggage carts, cars in the parking lots, rampies, etc. Even a V formation of geese flying by occasionally). I also have the BN2 Britton Norman Islander from BlackBox, which is the exact aircraft I flew out of this airport for Edgartown Air, so I’m really having a blast with this! Highly recommend, and the price is more than reasonable.

I don’t use this very much, because I made the purchase to complete a set, but will probably use it more when I get around to purchasing Boston Logan. I already have Block Island (which I believe MSFS provides for free) and a few other airports nearby. It’s a great scenery – especially if you have some surrounding scenery addons. I’ll be using this scenery to fly to Providence or Boston when I get a Vision Jet or PC12!
