Welshpool Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024  (ICAO code: EGCW)

Description

Situated in the heart of the Severn Valley, just south of the historic market town of Welshpool, Welshpool Airport—also known as Mid Wales Airport—offers a unique blend of rural charm and aviation utility. Established in the early 1990s on farmland, the airfield has steadily developed into a licensed civil aerodrome serving the aviation needs of Mid Wales.

Originally a simple grass strip carved out by local pilot Bob Jones, the airport quickly grew in scope and capability. A former RAF engineer and passionate aviator, Jones established the airfield in the early 1990s with the aim of bringing accessible flying to Mid Wales. His hands-on effort and commitment to aviation laid the foundation for what would become a fully licensed aerodrome. As interest grew, the site expanded to include a paved runway, hangars, and modern facilities, supporting both recreational and commercial aviation.

Today, Welshpool Airport is home to a wide range of aviation activity, including flight training, scenic tours, microlight and helicopter operations, and private charters. It also serves a critical role as a base for the Wales Air Ambulance, providing life-saving support across the region. The airport features a 1,020-metre asphalt runway, full pilot facilities, and a welcoming café for visitors and enthusiasts alike. Surrounded by the rolling hills of Powys, Welshpool Airport is a scenic and accessible hub for general aviation in Wales.
